This book is about the analysis of household survey data from developing countries and about how such data can be used to cast light on a range of policy issues. Much of the analysis works with household budget data, collected from income and expenditure surveys. We set out a list of survey data requirements for intergenerational analysis, and then discuss how the main household panel surveys in developed countries meet the criteria. In order to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of household panel surveys, the section also compares them with other types of longitudinal studies.

The Key Indicators Survey (KIS) is designed to help meet the monitoring and evaluation needs of programs involved in population and health activities in developing countries, especially to produce data for small areas (regions, districts, catchment areas) that may be targeted by an individual project, although they can be used in nationally representative surveys as well. We propose to conduct a household health survey within selected neighbourhoods within the CLAHRC NWC area, which will support the Public Health, Improving Mental Health and Managing Complex Needs themes.
